Flyerz is England Hockey's name for hockey for those with physical or learning difficulties or disabilities.
Tunbridge Wells Hockey Club is proud to have launched TW Flyerz in the autumn of 2017 and to have been the first club in Kent to offer this. We are also very pleased to have been able to work since then with other clubs in county and more widely to encourage and help them to set up their own Flyerz sections, working closely with Access Sport as part of their programme to expand Flyerz to another 50 clubs nationwide by 2021.
Hockey is a sport that's easily adapted to different ability levels, so there’s huge potential for hockey to become one of the leaders in disability inclusion. England Hockey wants more disabled children, young people and adults to have access to our sport. TWHC through TW Flyerz is committed to delivering this to our local community and to helping to promote and grow this more widely across the country.
We have a dedicated group of coaches and helpers (several of whom have children of their own who participate in Flyerz) to offer Flyerz sessions.
These sessions are truly open to all and we offer these sessions FREE of charge and provide all equipment.
We ran our first session on 24 September 2017 which was as much fun for us to put on and run as the enjoyment that it gave the participants - and here is an example of the feedback we received:
"I thought that you might like to know that Serena now considers herself a hockey player and a keen sportswoman! We have found an old hockey stick and ball and she has had a go on a tennis court!
So a VERY BIG THANK YOU - hope it goes from strength to strength!"
In April 2019, Club Matters caught up with Tunbridge Wells Flyerz to hear what a difference Flyerz Hockey has made to their club.
"TWHC particularly seek to engage disabled people and people with health conditions and enable them to participate on equal terms. In doing this they help to connect communities and improve wellbeing.
By opening up the sport of hockey they hope that their learnings will fundamentally change hockey and have an influence on other sports working towards mainstream inclusion."
With huge thanks to Skinners' School and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council who are supporting TW Flyerz by providing the use of their facilities and to the other individuals and organisations, some of whom are detailed below, who help and work with us on this innovative and rewarding venture that is our ongoing Flyerz journey.
